Okay, maybe these authors don't aim at YA (maybe they do) and maybe some of the characters are a little old to be called strictly YA but these are books I think young gay men should so so read. In fact, I think at least one of them should be part of the library of every secondary school if not compulsory reading. Are they really that good, I hear you say, cynically. IMHO YES
So who the hell are they? Read on and I'll tell you.
My first underrated, super-author, is Zathyn Priest. Not only is he a brilliant author but also a very talented graphic designer who has designed some breathtaking book covers. Check out his website http://zathynpriest.weebly.com/the-books.html and also the website for his graphic designs Scarlet Tie Designs
Zathyn has written some pretty amazing books. The biggest thing I love about these books is that the characters are imperfect. From a guy with brain damage after a fall, to a schizophrenic who is in love with a man who doesn't exist, to an epileptic rock star and an emo vampire. They're all breathtaking in their imperfections, like brilliant rubies, sapphires and emeralds, coloured by their flaws.
Check out ALL his books but, in particular
Freelance journalist, Tristan Church, wants to expose Galloway Mental Hospital’s dirty secrets. Teaming up with broody photographer, Mark, promises other perks. A ten year relationship with high school sweetheart, Eli, no longer offers Tristan the excitement he craves. Mark made his intentions clear and Tristan is close to giving in to his advances.
One morning at ‘The Gallows’ leaves Tristan reeling. He wasn’t prepared for the hell he witnessed and certainly wasn’t prepared to meet Zane. Disarmed by Zane’s angelic manner, Tristan can’t believe anyone would stand him up. He soon realises the tardy boyfriend only exists in Zane’s mind and the beautiful young man is not a visitor to The Gallows but a patient.
Eli walks out and Tristan’s life falls apart. A decision to meet with Mark almost ends in tragedy and Tristan finds solace in Zane’s company. Before long Zane’s delusions begin terrorising him again. While Tristan fights to save his own sanity and get Eli back, he knows someone must fight for Zane’s right to love a man no one else can see. A man who scares away violent hallucinations, takes away Zane’s fear, keeps him safe, and is trapped inside a stone statue.
Enigma isn’t like anyone Brandon’s met before. He’s unpredictable, volatile and… well, downright weird! To make matters worse, the gorgeous Enigma isn’t at all impressed with Brandon and is unafraid to crush the man’s ego at every opportunity.
For the first time in his life, Brandon has to work hard to win the guy. Will Brandon agree to Enigma’s left of centre, bizarre requests, or is the player about to get played?
And my absolute favourite
Tyler Curtis is a rock star with a notorious reputation as legendary as his awesome talent, but reality is far different to the myth a controlling manager has built up around him. Jordan Braxton is a website designer, prefers a quiet life, and is ready to settle down with one man. A chance meeting with Curtis turns Jordan's ordered world upside down. Can Jordan stop Tyler's life from spinning out of control and save their love for one another, or will tragedy tear them apart?
The second super-author I wish to enthuse about is Cody Kennedy. I'd seen him around Facebook for a while, posting some pretty inspirational stuff, and just generally being nice.Find him at http://ckennedyauthor.blogspot.co.uk/ where not only will you find some information on the author but some amazing free stories.
I'd been seeing his book, Omorphi, around in various places, and eventually decided to give it a go, mainly because of it's amazing cover. Oh WOW. I can't begin to describe this book. Just read it!!
High school senior Michael Sattler leads a charmed life. He’s a star athlete, has great friends, and parents who love him just the way he is. What’s missing from his life is a boyfriend. That’s a problem because he’s out only to his parents and best friend. When Michael accidentally bumps into Christy Castle at school, his life changes in ways he never imagined. Christy is Michael’s dream guy: smart, pretty, and sexy. But nothing could have prepared Michael for what being Christy's boyfriend would entail.
Christy needs to heal after years of abuse and knows he needs help to do it. After the death of his notorious father, he leaves his native Greece and settles in upstate New York. Alone, afraid, and left without a voice, Christy hides the myriad scars of his abuse. He desperately wants to be loved and when he meets Michael, he dares to hope that day has arrived. When one of Michael’s team-mates becomes an enemy and an abuser from Christy’s past seeks to return him to a life of slavery, only Michael and Christy's combined strength and unwavering determination can save them from the violence that threatens to destroy their future together.
