Fiery by Alyssa Astra

Today, I have great pleasure in introducing a fantastic YA book by Alyssa Astra, an author I haven't read before. I have a particular interest in transgender issues and my transgender character, Benji has a special place in my heart. There aren't too many books out there for transgender teens which is why I have such pleasure in introducing you to this one. Remember, I have gathered together a list of resources for troubled teens here

Blurb Aiden Adams, a transgender teen, begins writing in a journal when he moves to a new town named Ashmore and begins “passing." He is counting on everyone to believe that he is the every bit the male he appears to be. Writing in his journal helps him unclog his brain as he writes about the daily struggles he faces as a transgender teenager, his painful past that he is trying to forget, the new friends he is making, and the beautiful girl named Abby whom he has fallen in love with. Aiden has already come out to his open-minded mother, but will Abby be just as understanding? When Aiden loses his journal, he worries that the secret he is trying so desperately to keep will come out. And if it does, how will everyone react? Will Abby be able to cope with everyone knowing that he is transgender? Will his new friends accept Aiden for who he really is—a boy—or will everything fall apart?

Excerpt: The beautiful eyes belong to the beautiful girl from the library. The one I notice every day for one reason or another. The one I sketched on a page in my journal. I’m such a creep. “Hi,” she says loudly. I take out my earbuds and turn off my radio that’s still in my pocket. “Hi,” I say back. She's on one knee to be eye-level with me, but she spins and sits down beside me, really close. Wait a minute… SHE’S GOT ON THE COOLEST BOOTS! They’re shiny black leather and they go up to her knees. The bottom of them is a three-inch platform, all clunky and sexy—I mean cool. She has black skinny jeans tucked into them. “I just wanted to make sure you were alive,” the girl says. “Why are you all the way over here, by yourself?” “I don’t know anyone,” I admit. She holds out her right hand. “I’m Abby Abernathy.” I grasp her hand. Handshakes are always awkward. Her hand is really warm or mine is really cold. “I’m Aiden Adams.” “Nice to meet you—now you know someone.” She smiles. “I guess I do.”

Suicide Prevention Month

Did you know that September is Suicide Prevention Month? I didn't. This is a post my friend, Mark Lewis, put on Facebook.

I couldn't support him there for a number of reasons, but I promised to post here. If I can save one life by one act, post or any other method, I consider my life to be fulfilled.

Ok, so suicide is the number one silent killer of good people! So if it's a killer, it should be a big concern. But it's not!!! That said, September is Suicide Prevention month . If I don't see your name, I'll understand. May I ask my family and friends wherever you might be, to kindly copy and paste this status for one hour to give a moment of support to all of those who have family problems, health struggles, job issues, worries of any kind and just needs to know that someone cares? Do it for all of us, for nobody is immune. I hope to see this on the walls of all my family and friends just for moral support. I know some will!!! I did it for a friend and you can too. You have to copy and paste this one,

I'm not asking anyone to post anything anywhere, just to THINK

Don't forget I have numerous help links and resources for troubled young people on this blog

Suicide is not the answer

RELEASE DAY!! Hostage by Cheryl Headford (ME!!)

At last!!! It seems like I have been waiting forever for Hostage to get here. It's my very first Contemporary / Sci Fi / Paranormal / Fantasy YA book. Aimed at older teens it's a totally sex free pure adventure and I'm very proud of it. Harmony Ink have worked very hard to polish the book to the best it can be and I can't wait to share it.

I'll post an exclusive excerpt here, another at Nephy's World and a third on My Website, so be sure to check them all for glimpses into my world and meet my princes.

Blurb

When Astrin Raphael finds himself held hostage in an unfamiliar place, he has no option but to try to have faith in someone who seems to despise him. Little does he know his captor is his nemesis, Rowan Gabriel, whose disdain for Astrin all started with a misunderstanding years ago.

The kidnapping of Astrin’s father and Rowan’s uncle leaves the two princes with no choice but to form a precarious alliance. Rowan casts off his hatred and reaches out to Astrin, but Astrin’s doubt and insecurity run too deep to let go of easily. It’s not until Astrin almost loses his life that he’s able to acknowledge what Rowan means to him and admit to the love forming between them.

Their struggle doesn’t end when they return home and their Houses attempt to broker a deal to determine their future together. Each prince might face a choice between keeping his title and finding happiness with the man he loves.

Excerpt

When Rowan next opened his eyes, it was full daylight and he felt good. Astrin’s body was still wrapped round him. He was a little surprised, but not unhappy about it. The sun was up, shining brightly, and it was stiflingly hot. He had no desire to move. It was too comfortable, too comforting, but eventually he had no choice, because he could barely breathe.
Trying to shrug out of the sleeping bag without waking Astrin was hard, but Astrin seemed to still be sound asleep. He didn’t stir as Rowan carefully separated their bodies. which in places were stuck together, and freed himself from the cloying folds of cloth.
Free of the covers, Rowan felt cooler, and paused to look down at Astrin. His hair was all over the place, and he was sound asleep, breathing deeply with a half smile on his face. A vague disquiet squirmed in Rowan’s mind. Something had happened. He didn’t remember going to bed. He certainly didn’t remember getting naked, and he was sure he’d have remembered that. Something had definitely happened.
It was frustrating, not being able to remember. He had more sympathy for Astrin now. What must it feel like to not remember anything?
Not worrying about being seen, in such a remote place, Rowan got out of the car, and stretched in the warm sunshine. His body felt good, although for some reason his shoulder was stiff. He must have slept awkwardly on it. Easing the muscles, he stretched again, and it felt better.
The morning sun, and a cool breeze, caressed his naked body, and he sighed, tilting his face up to bathe in the warm sunlight that kissed him gently. Kissed him.
Something stabbed in his mind, something about last night. Unconsciously, his hand went to his shoulder and then to his head, feeling the stiffness in his hair. Suddenly everything came flooding back, and he turned hurriedly to the car. Astrin hadn’t moved.
Climbing into the car, Rowan felt... strange. He was suddenly very conscious he was naked, and took a moment to pull on his trousers and t-shirt, before he slid in beside Astrin and shook him gently. He didn’t stir.
“Astrin, are you okay? Astrin, wake up.” There was nothing, no flicker of awareness at all. “Astrin, are you all right? Astrin wake up. Wake up.”
Shaking him more urgently, Rowan was rewarded with a sigh and sleepy moan.
Astrin’s eyes fluttered open, unfocused. “Too... much energy.... I...tired.... Need...sleep.” Rowan had to lean closely to hear the words.
“Are you all right, though? You’re going to be okay?”
Astrin licked his lips and swallowed, closing his eyes with a sigh. “Okay... sleep.”
“Wait.”
With obviously great effort, Astrin opened his eyes, although Rowan wasn't sure he actually saw him.
“Last night. Something happened. I.... Did I...? Did you…?”

He was too late, Astrin slipped into sleep again, and this time Rowan didn’t wake him. Instead, he very gently stroked the hair out of his eyes, tucked the sleeping bag firmly around him, closed the door, and carefully drove out of the campsite, looking over his shoulder every time he went over a bump.

I hope by now you're all desperate to get your hands on the book, so here are the sales links for you
